Sometimes, a manufacturer just gets things exactly right. In the world of performance cars, BMW certainly has a much higher percentage of hits than it does misses, yet even still, every once in a while, a car comes out that is so good it shocks enthusiasts and the automotive press alike. The BMW M2 CS is that kind of car. It was no secret that people loved the M2, a fast, properly sized coupe with bulging flared fenders that was also comfortable enough to be used every day, what was there not to like? The M2 Competition that followed offered more performance but with a slightly harsher suspension that, although better on track, left something to be desired on the road. So when BMW announced the M2 CS as a run-out special edition at the end of M2 production, most people expected an M2 Competition, with everything turned up even further. However, once people got behind the wheel of the finished product in 2021, they realized that BMW had produced something truly legendary.
Finished in Hockenheim Silver, the car remains in essentially showroom condition, but benefits from a few small modifications that take it to the next level. From the factory, the M2 CS was fitted with numerous gloss carbon items including a front splitter, rear decklid spoiler, rear splitter and a glossy carbon roof panel which helps keep the center of gravity down. These darker items offer great contrast to the Hockenheim Silver paint, and are complimented by a set of black finish Apex SM-10 wheels, and an Akrapovic exhaust with four satin black tips out the back. Sitting behind the lightweight wheels is a set of carbon ceramic brakes which make for the ultimate performance setup on the M2. Making for minimal fade during the heaviest of trackwork, while also reducing the unsprung weight, making the car feel lighter and more willing to attack each corner.
The interior is not massively changed from the M2 Competition but extensive use of Alcantara is on display everywhere, which is punctuated by red stitching throughout the cabin. A unique “CS” logo is displayed prominently on the dashboard trim, also stitched in red, and the M-Performance seats feature the classic tri-color M-Stripes to harken back to the seats in the E36 M3. BMW used a number of ingenious tricks to save some weight on the M2 CS- the carbon fiber transmission tunnel shaves 6 pounds off the standard car and the removal of the center armrest and rear air conditioning vents, cuts that number even more. In this car, Dinan aluminum pedals have been added, as well as a pair of red steering wheel buttons which can be used to switch the car into the two customizable “M” modes.
Powering the M2 CS is a pumped-up version of the S55 twin-turbocharged Inline-6 found in the M2 Competition. The CS, benefits from the addition of the ECU out of an M4 Competition, meaning power is up from 405 to 444 but with a more dynamic power curve, meant to amplify driving enjoyment rather than widely available power everywhere in the rev-range. Offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT gearbox, the M2 CS is best enjoyed with the 3-pedal option found in this car which maximizes driver involvement and has a pleasant shift feel. A few upgrades have been carried out under the hood of this CS as well, including a CSF intercooler with Eventuri charge pipes, as well as an “M-Power” carbon fiber engine cover with corresponding M-Tri Color stripes.
At EAG, we believe it's never bad when BMW decides to put more power into its smallest car, but the M2 CS is more than that. We can't get enough of driving these cars between the weight savings, chassis tuning, and altered power band, they are just so much fun. This example with its low miles and numerous well-selected upgrades makes this M2 CS a really appealing proposition.
