LeMans Blue Over Caramel Leather, Three-Time EAG Repeat Visitor, Showing 61,900 Miles and Ready to be Enjoyed!
The sports sedan formula has evolved significantly since the earliest incarnations in the 1950s. Moving from small and nimble vehicles built to take on tight European mountain roads to the 200+ mph autobahn luxury vehicles being produced today. Although the method may have changed along the way, the ethos is still the same: take something that looks like an otherwise ordinary family car and inject a dose of excitement into it. For decades, BMW has been at the forefront of this segment, and when they introduced the E39 M5 in 1998, many enthusiasts will tell you that they perfected the formula. Combining timeless exterior design with a running gear that allowed it to beat up on purpose-built sports cars, the E39 M5 is regarded by many to be the ultimate sports sedan.
This 2002 M5 is on its third trip through Enthusiast Auto Group and is pretty much a dream specification. Finished in LeMans Blue over Caramel Nappa leather, this car shows 61,900 miles at the time of cataloging and is just about as good as it gets. With a build date of 11/30/2001, this 2002 car was sold new in New York and landed in its first owner's garage on 1/4/2002. Only under the care of this owner for a few years, starting in 2005, it was purchased by true enthusiasts who held on to all of the service history, beginning in April of that year. This car first entered Enthusiast Auto Group’s orbit in December 2016, at which time it showed 48,000 miles. Upon its arrival at our shop, it underwent our comprehensive rejuvenation process that included replacing valve cover gaskets, coolant pump, clutch, front and rear main seal, and numerous suspension bushings. Along with numerous other EAG touches, this car was returned to essentially showroom condition and sold to its new owner shortly thereafter. The car then came back to us again in 2018 with an additional 5,000 miles on it, at which time significantly less rejuvenation was required, but we still fixed every item that wasn’t up to our standards. In total over $30,000 has been invested into preserving this M5!
The bright LeMans Blue paint on this E39 M5 is one of the holy grail colors for the car, working perfectly with the simple, un-fussy design. The M5 wheels are finished in a unique multi-stage Satin Chrome finish that is notoriously difficult to recreate. However, under our watchful eye, they were refinished on this car’s first EAG visit in 2016, and they still look stunning. When new, you could specify two separate interior styles for the M5- “Sport” and “Luxury” that offered different upholstery and trim options throughout the interior. The Luxury specification was arguably the more tasteful of the two and the only option if you wanted the rich Caramel leather seen on this car. With its vertical stitching on the seats and wood trim in place of brushed aluminum, it really plays into the luxury sports car vibe the E39 gives off.
Powering this M5 is the famed S62 V8- a true masterpiece of engineering. With 4.9 liters of displacement, this engine produces 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and offers instant throttle response thanks to 8 individual throttle bodies and double VANOS variable valve timing. In all E39 M5s, this power is sent through a 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox with a reinforced clutch to the rear wheels via a shortened 3.15:1 limited-slip rear differential.
The E39 M5 may represent the pinnacle of sports sedan development for those who love driving. Sure you can find any number of newer cars that are faster, and there may be older cars that are more involving, but for a drive that combines the best of everything, you just can’t do better.
