1991 BMW E30 M3 - Alpine White

Although the E28 M5 was the first BMW M Car to make its way stateside, it is indisputable that the E30 M3 was the car that made BMW Motorsports an iconic name in the United States. Built to compete in German DTM racing against the likes of the Mercedes 190E Cosworth and Ford Sierra RS500, the E30 M3 was BMW’s first race car for the road. Although the powertrain and driving experience were extremely special, the visual upgrades over a standard E30 were what first piqued most people’s interest. Instantly recognizable box flares paired with BMW’s signature basket weave BBS wheels and rear spoiler are just a few of the apparent changes, but in truth, the E30 M3 shares just two body panels with a more run-of-the-mill 325i. To the true enthusiast, it was always clear how special this homologation car is, but it wasn’t until about 10 years ago that collectors began to take notice of this truly unique vehicle.

This 1991 BMW M3 comes from the final year of the model’s production and is on its third trip through EAG’s hands, coming to us for the first time in 2015. Finished in Alpine White II over a Gray leather interior, this car has been lightly modified with high-quality pieces over the years that enhance the driving experience without deviating too far from what makes these cars beloved. Showing 75,570 miles at the time of cataloging, this example came to us as a very solid car, which has since been thoroughly inspected to bring it up to EAG standards with over $30,000 spent in our workshop across its 3 stints here. The exterior remains almost entirely stock in appearance but has been treated to a set of Euro-spec 16” basketweave BBS wheels in place of the original 15” units (which are also included) and sits slightly lower thanks to the tried and true Biestein/H&R setup specific to the E30 M3 chassis.

The interior of this M3 is wrapped in Silver Bison leather on the seats and door cards, and gray carpets complete the look. Up front, the factory sport seats are in absolutely impeccable condition with hardly so much as a crease on the bolsters. Slide into the driver’s seat, and you are greeted by an upgraded BMW M-Tech 2 steering wheel, which replaces the notoriously unattractive airbag wheel from these later E30s and would have been standard equipment on the M3 Evo. Additionally, an M-Tech 1 shift knob tops the 5-speed manual shifter, which once again is what you would have found on a European market example.

Powered by a 2.3-liter dual overhead cam inline-4 with individual throttle bodies, known as the S14. The US version of the car produces 192 horsepower and can rev to 7,250 rpm with a smooth build of power all the way to the redline. This example likely is a bit more potent thanks to a set of upgraded cams and a more free-flowing performance muffler. At Enthusiast Auto Group, we are exceptionally familiar with this powerplant and have a standard series of services and checks we like to perform when they come through our shop. Before it was offered for sale, we conducted an in-depth check on the S14 and replaced the oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket, along with the drive belts and power steering lines. This engine sends power through a 5-speed manual gearbox and out to the rear wheels. Although the E30 M3 is a quick car, even with some power adders, it isn’t winning any drag races; where this car truly shines is in the corners. Known for its neutral, predictable handling, the suspension on this car has been refreshed with performance shocks and springs, as well as sway bars and a strut bar in the engine bay. None of these modifications make the car too harsh or extreme, but just take everything up one notch on the driving enjoyment scale while enhancing the driving experience.

At Enthusiast Auto Group, we love E30 M3s for their pure driving feel, extensive motorsport heritage, and historical significance for the BMW Motorsport brand. If you are on the hunt for an E30 M3 that presents in outstanding condition it doesn’t get much better than this example. Please inquire to learn more about this specific vehicle’s history and why we confidently stand behind it as an EAG M3.
