1 of 600 Sport Evolutions, Finished in Brilliant Red Over Anthracite/M-Cloth Interior, Showing 22,934 km and Comprehensively Serviced and Ready to Enjoy.
All E30 M3s are special cars. As the beginning of the legendary nameplate, these cars are easily some of the most significant vehicles in the history of BMW. But even still, not all E30 M3s are created equal. In an effort to stay competitive with the ever-faster competition in the German and English Touring Car Championships, BMW Motorsport developed a series of Evolution cars for homologation. Starting with the Evolution 1 in 1987, which was followed by the 1988 Evolution 2, the most extreme to come from BMW was the Sport Evolution, which was announced in December 1989. Designed to take on the ever-faster cars from Mercedes Benz and Audi, the Sport Evolution featured more displacement, improved aerodynamics, stiffer suspension, and a different interior. The results were spectacular and thankfully for us enthusiasts, BMW needed to build 600 roadgoing variants to homologate these changes in the race car.
This 1990 BMW E30 M3 Sport Evolution was built on January 19th 1990, and is finished in Brilliantrot. Sold to its first German owner on June 19th, 1990, this car was exceptionally well cared for, and shows just 22,934 km at the time of cataloging. This is not our first time with this car at EAG - we shipped it from its original importer in November of 2020, at which time we performed our usual series of checks and rejuvenation before passing it along to its new owner. The car was returned to us in June of 2023, at which time we did a host of further rejuvenation work just to make sure the car was as perfect as it could be.
The Sport Evolution’s body may not look all that different from a regular E30 M3, but significant alterations were made that result in big improvements in performance. Adjustable front and rear spoilers were fitted, as was thinner side glass to remove weight. In a further effort to cut weight, a lightweight trunk lid and bumpers were also fitted. The Sport EVO was only offered in 2 colors- Jet Black with red accents, or Brilliant Red with black accents - like you see on this car. The wheels are 16” BBS basket weaves - 1” larger than the standard US cars- with the centers painted in a deep gray color, with polished outer lips.
To those that don’t know, the interior of a Sport Evolution might just look like an E30 M3 that received some aftermarket upgrades. But the truth is, everyone upgrading their cars in this style are actually trying to replicate what the Sport Evo did so well when it was new. The standard BMW sport seats were traded out for high-back Recaros which were wrapped in anthracite cloth on the bolsters and headrests, with M-Cloth centers. Although leather could be specified, the cloth like you see on this car is without a doubt the ultimate specification. The M-Cloth carries through onto the door cards, and the M-Tech 2 steering wheel rim is wrapped in Alcantara. Red seatbelts create a nice accent piece, and at the bottom of the center stack sits a numbered Sport Evolution placard.
The S14 inline-4 is a very famous engine in the BMW circles thanks to its lively throttle response and remarkable power numbers for only displacing 2.3 liters. In standard M3 form, this engine is rated at 192 horsepower which is achieved towards the top of the powerband. For the Sport Evolution, BMW’s Motorsport engineers dug deep to create something even more impressive. Thanks to an increase in both bore and stroke, the S14 now displaced nearly 2.5-liters and more aggressive camshafts were installed along with larger intake and exhaust valves. These, along with a number of other small tweaks brought power up to 238 hp which was achieved at 7,000 rpm. The gearbox is a Getrag 265 5-speed manual with a dog-leg first gear, which was paired with a lightened flywheel from the factory to help the engine spin to the upper rev ranges even more quickly. This then sent power to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential. The chassis was upgraded with stiffer springs and shocks, and the anti-roll bar was thicker than in prior cars. In total, the car sat 10mm lower than a standard car, but the track width both front and rear was widened.
It won’t surprise you to hear that at EAG, we are crazy about these cars. Even though they are absolute M-Car royalty, we have been lucky enough to put hands on a number of them over the years, and they never disappoint. From the subtle exterior updates, to that more powerful engine, the Sport Evolution takes a great car - the E30 M3 - and makes it absolutely spectacular. This is a wonderful example that has been very well cared for from new, and benefits from some significant dialing in by us to ensure that as soon as you get behind the wheel, you’ll see why these cars are so beloved.
