EAG Impressions
The E60 5-Series marked a dramatic departure in BMW's design language, featuring Chris Bangle's controversial "flame surfacing" aesthetic. While the styling divided opinion, the car's dynamic abilities were universally praised. European markets received a broader range of engines, including efficient diesels, but U.S. buyers still had access to most of the high-performance variants. The E60 M5, with its Formula 1-inspired V10 engine, was nearly identical in both markets, signaling BMW's commitment to delivering a more consistent product globally.
Overview
This 2008 BMW M5 is finished in Black Sapphire Metallic Over Black Extended Merino Leather and has been under the care of a single owner from new. Showing just 31,874 miles at the time of cataloging, this car has been well-kept and equipped with a coveted 6-speed manual gearbox. Delivered to Westchester BMW in White Plains, NY, this E60 remains largely stock, with the only notable change from stock being the 10-spoke wheels having been painted satin black. The E60 M5 received several body updates over the standard 5-series of the era, including flared fenders front and rear with additional venting up front, a deeper front bumper, and a revised rear bumper with space for four exhaust pipes.
The interior is one of the nicest ever put into an M5- a perfect combination of luxury and sport before BMW became too screen-heavy. Wrapped in black Nappa leather, the front bucket seats are well bolstered but extremely comfortable and offer a wide range of adjustability. To break up, the black brushed stainless trim is present throughout the interior, on the dash, center console, and door cards. The center stack has buttons and dials to control the HVAC and stereo, while car settings and navigation happen on the centrally mounted i-Drive screen.
The true masterpiece of the E60 M5 is the V10 -known as the S85-that sits under the hood. This was one of the very few times in BMW M history they developed an engine that was not based on any other engine in the brand’s stable. This all-alloy 90-degree 5.0 liter V10 is fitted with four valves per cylinder and individual throttle bodies, producing 500 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 384 lb-ft of torque at 6,100 rpm. Although BMW claimed a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds, Car and Driver were able to make the run in 4.2 seconds, with 100 mph coming up in just 9.4, and BMW’s electronically limited 155 mph top end was actually more like 190 mph when the limiter was removed. This car is one of the few produced by BMW with a true 6-speed manual gearbox. Originally, BMW never intended to put a manual in this car, instead making the SMG III the only transmission available. However, after much complaining from American enthusiasts, they decided to offer a 3-pedal variant only in the US. This really enhances the driving experience while also making the car easier to own.
The E60 M5 is finally getting its due from enthusiasts who are realizing that not only is the car quite attractive, but the driving experience is second to none. The era of naturally aspirated race-derived V10s has likely passed us by and that BMW ever put this engine in a production sedan is something that should be celebrated. To experience this one-of-a-kind powerplant, connected to a manual gearbox for yourself, give us a call to check this car out.
History
This new arrival received its first EAG Comprehensive Inspection and we were very happy with the results. The services that followed were: oil and filter service, brake fluid flush along with the interior cabin filter replacement, coolant flush, engine intake air filter replacement, valve cover gaskets replaced on both banks of the engine, front thrust rod bushings replaced along with a four-wheel alignment, rear pinion seal replaced, and tires replaced with Michelin's best 4S tires.
The EAG Extra Mile services include everything to make this an example we proudly stand behind. Those services include new steering wheel trim, new kidney grills, and side gills, a thigh support motor that started to show signs of fatigue, new trunk lamp based on the clamp starting to get loose, a new security siren, and new key batteries. We know the importance of delivering what BMW ///M envisioned as a final product no matter the years separated from production, so we go the Extra Mile to make sure the next owner has the opportunity to indulge.
