The E39 5-Series is often regarded as one of BMW's finest hours, striking a near-perfect balance between comfort, performance, and technology. While European markets enjoyed a wide range of engines, including efficient diesels and potent V8s, U.S. buyers had a more limited selection. The crown jewel of the lineup, the E39 M5, arrived in North America for the 2000 model year. Unlike previous generations, this M5 featured a V8 engine, bringing it closer in specification to its European counterpart. However, subtle differences remained, such as European models receiving a more advanced dynamic stability control system.
Overview
At EAG, we think that the E39 M5 may be the ultimate sport sedan of all time. Although BMW has built some cars that are faster, more nimble and more luxurious inside, there was something about this car that made everything just gel perfectly. This is a great example for someone who wants to see what all the fuss is about with this chassis and can appreciate.
Powering this M5 is the famed S62 V8- a true masterpiece of engineering. With 4.9 liters of displacement, this engine produces 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and offers instant throttle response thanks to 8 individual throttle bodies and double VANOS variable valve timing. In all E39 M5s, this power is sent through a 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox with a reinforced clutch to the rear wheels via a shortened 3.15:1 limited-slip rear differential. On this car’s trip through our shop in 2020, we added a few performance upgrades to this example that add a bit of power and make for a properly enjoyable driving experience. A Dinan cold air intake was fitted, along with some Dinan performance software to take advantage of the freer breathing. Additionally, a BMW short throw shifter was fitted to the Getrag box which, especially when paired with the ZHP shift knob, makes the gearbox so much fun to use.
The sports sedan formula has evolved significantly since the earliest incarnations in the 1950s. Moving from small and nimble vehicles built to take on tight European mountain roads to the 200+ mph autobahn luxury vehicles being produced today. Although the method may have changed along the way, the ethos is still the same: take something that looks like an otherwise ordinary family car and inject a dose of excitement into it. For decades, BMW has been at the forefront of this segment, and when they introduced the E39 M5 in 1998, many enthusiasts will tell you that they perfected the formula. Combining timeless exterior design with a running gear that allowed it to beat up on purpose-built sports cars, the E39 M5 is regarded by many to be the ultimate sports sedan.
History
This specific E39 M5 is a new arrival to EAG and right away we went to work making it a turn-key example and future Signature Vehicle. Finding a late model version of the E39, in this spec, at this mileage is incredibly rare. When you couple that with the fact it's been a TX and CA vehicle its whole life the position to preserve this vehicle is a must.
The previous owner and client knew this was a special vehicle and enhanced it properly with Dinan components. This now is what we call a Signature S Package so it has the intake, exhaust, front strut brace, and rear sway bar all upgraded from Dinan. The combination of these parts allows for a more visceral experience without any compromise. In order to ensure that enjoyment can be had at anytime EAG has completed its Comprehensive Inspection and will be performing several services to make this turn-key, anytime. These services include a full fluid and filter change, fan clutch replacement, belt tensioner replacement, oil pan solenoid o-rings, upper control and toe arm replacement. front thrust rod bushings and an alignment to accompany all of the suspension refresh.
